Acting is a conscious construct. You train the actor’s instrument so that it can fully engage with the preparation and the construct you are creating. That is why acting is a craft: you are always working on a task, not simply trying to “act truthfully.”
The construct itself is imaginary, but it must become real to you. The deeper your understanding of that construct and your relationship to it, the more fully your instrument can respond.
The development of your instrument is a journey. There is no shortcut and no destination—only the continual process of discovery and refinement.
To feed that growth and improve the quality of your work, you need to establish a clear foundation of preparation and a deep relationship with both the script and the character. The stronger that foundation, the deeper and broader your creativity becomes, allowing your instrument to respond with greater freedom, precision, and imagination.
Ultimately, your goal is not simply to reproduce emotion, but to live truthfully in imaginary circumstances. The richer your preparation and the more completely you inhabit the construct, the more naturally truthful your work becomes. Your instrument is then free to respond moment by moment, bringing authenticity to an imagined world.
